Choosing a Sourcing Model
Your sourcing model determines your margins, control, risk, and delivery experience. There is no universally best model; the right choice depends on your capital, goals, and the product category.
The three core models
- Wholesale: you buy stock in bulk for lower unit cost, control quality and shipping, but tie up capital in inventory
- Drop-shipping: a supplier ships directly to your buyer, with minimal upfront cost, but lower margins and less control
- Manufacturing: you produce or private-label your own products for maximum differentiation, but with the highest complexity and investment
Matching the model to your strategy
If you are building a premium brand, manufacturing or private labelling gives you the differentiation and quality control premium buyers demand. If you are testing a niche with limited capital, drop-shipping lets you validate demand cheaply first.
Many successful stores evolve: they drop-ship to validate, then shift to wholesale or manufacturing as the brand proves itself.
